Location: Ainos

Mount Ainos in Kefalonia: Ainos is the highest mountain not only in Kefalonia but also of all islands located in the Ionian Sea. It is 1628 meters tall and bears great ecological significance in terms of local biodiversity.

The National Park of Ainos was established in 1962 with the purpose of protecting the flora and fauna in the area and is now part of the network “Natura 2000”. Among many wildlife species, Mount Ainos is the natural habitat of foxes, birds, ferrets and wild horses. You will also encounter small lilac flowers (Viola Cephalonica) and one of the rarest types of fir trees in Europe, Abies Cephalonica. The trunks of these fir trees are particularly dark in color and so dense that Ainos was given the name Black Mountain (Monte Nero).

There are many forest paths you can take and the route is a must for all nature lovers who visit Kefalonia and enjoy hiking. The dense vegetation is particularly refreshing during warm summer days and the high points of the mountain offer a truly unforgettable, panoramic view of the island. The ruins of an ancient temple and a few monasteries are also located on Mount Ainos, including Agios Eleftherios and Zoodochos Pigi. Near the latter, you will find a natural fountain, too.

One of the most popular and beloved dishes on the island is tsigaridia, which are served mainly in the winter and spring when wild greens are abundant. This recipe uses wild greens, leeks, chicory, wild asparagus, spinach, and even spinach, which are sautéed together with onions, celery, parsley, garlic, and tomatoes! It is worth trying this meze that will really open your appetite!
Meat lovers will taste various dishes with various cooking methods, such as kokoras lagotos with thick macaroni or noodles or alternatively cooked in the oven with potatoes. They will also try the traditional mosxari prokado, in the recipe of which they “prokarou” (pierce) the meat, filling it with garlic, cloves, and kefalotiri cheese! However, if you are one of those who want a meal rich in nutrients but also quite filling, definitely prefer the kokkinisto patsa which is inspired by the cuisine of Florence!
A very popular dish, based on its simplicity and the deliciousness of the three basic ingredients it has, is strapatsada. The egg, tomatoes, and feta cheese star in a meal that is served for breakfast and lunch! In addition, the traditional riganada is, we would say, the Kefalonian version of the Cretan dakos, with soaked slices of village bread, fresh tomatoes, olive oil, and kefalotiri cheese that smell like summer!
We could not omit the traditional skordalia of the island, which is made from mashed potatoes and garlic paste accompanied by olive oil and lemon juice. It is served naturally with fried cod but also with boiled zucchini, the “moropoula”!
For the end, we left the traditional pies of the island, such as the kefalonitiki kreatopita, which is made from three different types of meat (pork, beef, goat), but in some areas they add figs to the filling. Also popular on the island is the bakaliaropita with filling of dried cod, rice, and vegetables or alternatively with leeks and pumpkin that offers an unforgettable gustatory experience!
